Waiting on Wednesday: Cress

New WoW

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases.

Cress by Marissa Meyer

Rapunzel’s tower is a satellite. She can’t let down her hair—or her guard.
In this third book in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.
Their best hope lies with Cress, who has been trapped on a satellite since childhood with only her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker—unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.
When a daring rescue goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing stop her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only ones who can.

EEP! Ever since I read Scarlet, I’ve been dying to get my hands on Cress. I really like fairytale retellings, on the one condition that they’re actually good, and I really like dystopian, on the one condition that they’re actually good. Guess what? Lunar Chronicles is all three – fairytale retellings, dystopian, and good. Really, really good. It’s got a fast story, an innovative plot, and a lovable cast. If you’re look for the next Bella Swan, rest assured that you won’t find her amongst Marissa Meyer’s characters.

Cress is apparently based on Rapunzel, which isn’t – as far as I know – a fairytale that’s popularly retold, possibly because it’s difficult to fit lifelong house arrest into a modern setting. Meyer did a great job with Cinder (Cinderella, obviously) and Scarlet (Red Riding Hood), so I’m confident that Cress won’t disappoint! And I find that I like penultimate books in series a lot – sometimes even more than the last book. Can’t wait!

Cress is the third book in Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series. Its expected release date is February 4th, 2014.

    1. Yes, you definitely do. It’s a great read all around. The characters, the plot – the whole deal. Let me know when you do read it 🙂
